Maxis has said it has “no intention” of making SimCity playable offline “any time soon” as scores of players continue to be disrupted by the game’s ongoing server issues.

Speaking in an open Q&A session on Twitter over the weekend, studio head Lucy Bradshaw said that the decision for SimCity to require a persistent internet connection to function was “on Maxis. EA does not force design upon us. We own it, we are working 24/7 to fix it, and we are making progress”.

“We have no intention of offlining SimCity any time soon,” Bradshaw added, when asked how the game could be affected by potential server shutdowns in a few years time, “but we’ll look into that as part of our earning back your trust efforts.”

SimCity has been hampered by server issues since its North American launch last Tuesday, rendering the game unplayable to some people, and disrupting the gameplay experience to scores of others.

In a further update posted last night, Bradshaw said that “the core problem with getting in and having a great SimCity experience is almost behind us.

“Our players have been able to connect to their cities in the game for nearly 8 million hours of gameplay time and we’ve reduced game crashes by 92% from day one.”

She added: “Tonight and tomorrow we’ll be monitoring each server and gameplay metrics to ensure that the service remains strong and game is playing great. We need a few more days of data before we can assure you that the problem is completely solved and the game is running at 100 percent.”

EA will be providing SimCity buyers with a free game as compensation for the game’s server issues.
