Baldur’s Gate 3 is a phenomenal RPG, and the game’s modding community is just as phenomenal as the game they’re modding. One of the game’s most interesting mods, Path to Menzoberranzan, is a gigantic custom campaign that takes players back to the second game’s City of Coin.

With hundreds of fans working on the project, the team behind the project is aiming to have a full campaign with six-to-eight new companions, new factions, an entire story with side quests and more. While ambitious we’ve seen fan projects like Fallout London actually hit completion before, and the team behind this BG3 project is as dedicated as they come.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Path to Menzoberranzan update

In the mod’s latest monthly progress update to fans on Discord, project lead Lotrich confirmed that the “first working build” of the massive Baldur’s Gate 3 campaign is functioning. The ‘first playable’, as the industry calls it, version of the mod gives players an introduction to the custom campaign.

“We’ve made big strides on the starting location,” Lotrich told fans on Discord. “The build includes combat, dialogues, companions, and a slice of the story to dive into.

The Path to Menzoberranzan team aren’t “sharing it to public access”, but the vertical slide of the custom campaign will “provide a solid foundation for our first demo in the future”, the project lead explained.

This is just one area from the upcoming custom campaign, and it looks beautiful.

Additionally, the team are still working on a way to implement custom music into the campaign. In a previous interview with us at VideoGamer, Lotrich explained that custom music is still one of the few parts of the Baldur’s Gate 3 toolkit that they haven’t been able to crack, but tremendous effort is being done to make it work.

In the behind-the-scenes we’ve personally seen from the Path to Menzoberranzan team, the organisation of the custom campaign is one of the best we’ve ever seen. While there are a lot of people helping the project, it’s also incredible efficient, and the team has made tremendous progress.

At the time of writing, the first demo for the upcoming custom campaign is still slated for a mid-2025 release, although the team has massively expanded its scope since that date was announced. Hopefully, we get to play a little bit of the custom campaign in the near future.
