Nintendo of America has announced that first week sales of Super Mario Galaxy in the US topped 500,000 units, more than any other Wii title during its first week. The half a million sales also make Galaxy the fastest selling Mario title in the history of the franchise.

In the UK the game managed to place fifth in the All Formats Chart, and third based on sales on single formats – behind Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty 4 on Xbox 360. In Japan the game sold 250,000 units in week one, but dropped off substantially in week two with only 75,000 units.

Although impressive, Mario Galaxy sales look unlikely to match Halo 3, which notched up a staggering 3.3 million units during its first 12 days on sale in North America.

Head over to our Super Mario Galaxy review to find out if the game is worthy of such high sales.
