The Worlds Part 1 update is the first of a few huge updates to Hello Games’ once-notorious title. It launched as a free update, much to the surprise of many players out there, and has already been applauded by fans for its expansive scope. However, the No Man’s Sky update is a great opportunity to back up your save file, especially since new patches like to break old ones.

This has happened quite a few times before with No Man’s Sky. Since it’s such a huge, procedurally generated game, there’s a lot of opportunity for save-file corruption to absolutely nuke all of the hours you’ve put into a particular save. Furthermore, this is exactly the type of thing that typically happens with a new update.

It happened a fair few times with the Omega 4.5 update, which saw several people’s save files corrupted in early February. Thankfully, the help of those on the internet sorted out these issues, though it’s likely that some players faced irreparable issues.

If you’re going to be playing the latest update for No Man’s Sky, then it’s probably a good idea to create a backup of your save file. You can find by typing %APPDATA%\HelloGames\NMS into your File Explorer search bar. From there, you will be able to locate your /DefaultUser/ and then /cache/ folder, in which you will find each save file.

It should be noted that copying and pasting save files from the Microsoft version of the game is not always possible, and you could face further errors. This is where the help of those online comes in handy. You’re going to be able to find save file editors which can help you create accurate backups of your save files and many more.

With Part 2 likely on its way shortly too, the future looks bright for No Man’s Sky. Again.
