The rights to hugely popular fantasy card game Magic: The Gathering have been snapped up by 20th Century Fox, with the aim to turn the property into a movie franchise to rival the likes of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, The Hollywood Reporter has said.

X-Men scribe Simon Kinberg is on board to produce and develop the project, though no stars or director are currently attached.

Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis and Wizards of the Coast CEO Greg Leeds will oversee and exec produce.

The card game was introduced back in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast, and acquired by Hasbro in 1999.
