Codemasters has announced the development of Maelstrom, a strategy action game being developed by the award winning Russian development team KDV Games. KDV’s past credits include Perimeter, an RTS which won many awards back in 2004. Maelstrom takes place on a devastated future earth, which has come under threat from an alien invasion.

In the wake of an apocalyptic ecological disaster, water has become the most valuable of all resources and has forced the remaining humans to separate into two factions. They must now fight off both the invading aliens and their rival faction. Each faction has its own unique strengths and weaknesses.

The Remnants: Led by ex-US military General James Buchanan, The Remnants are the underdogs in this bleak future. However, these cunning, low-tech resistance fighters are large in numbers and even more resourceful in their guerrilla battle tactics.

The Ascension: Ascension Industries is headed by Arlan Khan. Commanding total respect, his supporters are highly intelligent and logical, yet ruthless exploiters of future technology such as transforming robotics. However, where they obtained such tech remains unknown…

The Aliens: The mysterious alien invaders are desperate for a new planet to inhabit and take resource from. Masters of Bio-engineering, they range from huge beasts to large swarms of small creatures.

Maelstrom features a mix of strategy and third-person missions and is set in a totally destructible environment. The game is pencilled in for a Q3 2006 release exclusive to the PC and you can find details on the game’s official website.
