Channel 5 has been rapped by Ofcom after airing what have been deemed “excessively noisy” sponsorship ads for PlayStation 3.

Sony’s deal with Channel 5 sees its PlayStation 3 branding appear alongside primetime movies on Channel 5, 5* and FIVE USA all year.

Ofcom received 17 complaints about the loudness of the ads between February 3 and March 15 and ruled them to be “excessively noisy” and therefore in breach of broadcast guidelines.

Channel 5 blamed the excessive loudness on a third-party company and “human error” and removed the ads from transmission. However, Ofcom received further complaints between March 20 and March 25, with Ofcom carrying out more tests which once again concluded the ads to be “excessively noisy”.

The broadcaster admitted to repeating the loud ads due to “human error” and “sincerely regretted” the situation. Channel 5 also said it was in the process of upgrading its transmission facilities to reduce the risk future problems.

No real harm was done. Hopefully Sony and Channel 5 can now continue their relationship without bursting the eardrums of viewers.
