Limbo was VideoGamer.com’s second favourite game of last year, so if you’re anything like us you’re eager to see what Danish studio Playdead will make next.
Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll have to wait to find out. According to Playdead CEO Dino Patti, the next project will once again be directed by Arnt Jensen – but it may be some time before the game is shown off.
“Arnt will be directing our next title as well, and the team has undertaken many new challenges, so I can’t wait to show it, though there will probably be a while before we are ready,” Patti told Eurogamer.
PlayStation 3 and PC users won’t mind so much, as they’ll be getting their own version of Limbo on July 20 (in Europe), with a Steam release scheduled for August 2. These later versions will also contain a “little extra secret”, although Patti wouldn’t give any further details on this.
The studio co-founder did explain that Limbo was originally planned as a PC release, until Microsoft made Playdead a better offer:
“Initially, Arnt Jensen, my partner and game director for Playdead, was interested in releasing Limbo as a PC title. During production, however, we decided to bring it to all platforms, which would offer the full experience to the gamers. When it came to the actual coordination with the specific platforms holders, Microsoft provided us with an excellent opportunity, which included a lot of support for the title which in the end would mean a better visibility for Limbo.
“That deal also included exclusivity. So that and production/QA are the things which has been keeping us [from releasing the game on other platforms.]”
Patti added that the popularity of Limbo Xbox LIVE demo helped the game to gain momentum.
“We love that the the game has been seen and played by so many people,” he said.
“Over two million people have played the demo. Besides that Limbo has gotten a lot of positive attention by the fans, people and magazines we respect. We hope that this foundation will make it easier for us in the future to get our games created as Arnt and the team would want them to be.”
Patti previously stated that Limbo would be an Xbox LIVE Arcade “exclusive for life,” but hinted that Playdead might go multi-platform with its next release.
