The PlayStation Vita has sold only 2.2 million units worldwide since its launch in Japan in December 2011, PlayStation Germany boss Uwe Bassendowski revealed to Playfront at gamescom last week.
If accurate it’s no wonder Sony had until this point been extremely secretive about the handheld’s sales figures.
PlayStation Vita had sold over 1.2 million units worldwide as of February 26 2012, Sony Computer Entertainment announced earlier this year. This means a further one million units sold in the five/six months that followed.
According unverified figures posted by NeoGAF user ‘Road‘ the PS Vita is lagging millions of units behind what other handheld consoles managed to sell in the same time frame.
PSP had told 5.05 million units, 3DS 6.68 million, DS 6.65 million and Game Boy Advance 9.58 million.
Let’s not be too down on the PS Vita. Sony is clearly still backing the handheld as seen by the line-up of software heading its way.
