Larian Studios is officially leaving the world of Baldur’s Gate 3 behind. Following the release of the amazing Patch 8 update, the studio released a heartfelt goodbye as full production begins on its next RPG, a title that isn’t expected to release until 2028 at the absolute earliest.

While Hasbro is tinkering away in the background with plans to “raise the bar” for the future of Baldur’s Gate, many fans are craving a Larian-led DLC expansion. However, game director and studio CEO Swen Vincke explains that working on DLC is “boring” compared to creating a brand-new experience.

Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC would’ve been more boring to make

In an interview with GameSpot, Vincke explained that Larian Studios is simply “not in the DLC business”. While games like Divinity: Original Sin 2 have seen some additions after launch, the studio has not created a massive expansion for an existing story. Instead, the studio likes to work on new projects.

Vincke admitted that the team planned to create a DLC expansion for Baldur’s Gate 3 as it was such a “huge hit”, but the studio didn’t enjoy working on DLC. While the team did end up creating some major post-launch additions, an expansion just wouldn’t have made the team happy.

In the interview with GameSpot, Vincke explained that working on DLC instead of new projects is simply “boring”. While it can lead to happy players, it’s not something that the team enjoyed working on.

“You want a happy player and happy business, but you also need to have a happy developer,” the Larian CEO explained. “What we’re doing now makes developers way more happy. We had a huge hit, and people said ‘DLC this’ and ‘DLC that,’ and we said we’d make DLC, but then when we had a moment to think, we asked ourselves, ‘what are we doing?'”

In the year since Baldur’s Gate 3’s release, Larian has been working behind-the-scenes on its next project. Expected to be another major RPG, the studio has already massively improved its internal Divinity Engine to fix some of the major issues with BG3.

Despite Larian’s departure from the series, Baldur’s Gate 3 is far from dead. While Larian may be gone, talented teams of modders are taking up the mantle with one group filled with hundreds of fans working on a custom campaign with “six-to-eight” custom companions set in Baldur’s Gate 3’s City of Coin.
