While Larian Studios may be leaving Baldur’s Gate 3 to focus on its next RPG, Dungeons and Dragons owner Hasbro has plans to keep the game alive into the future.

As Patch 8 is pitched as the final major update for BG3, Larian Studios is focusing on what’s next for the studio. However, Hasbro isn’t ready to abandon the game or its highly marketable characters anytime soon.

Hasbro has a future for Baldur’s Gate 3

Speaking at the 2025 Game Developers Conference, Hasbro senior vice president of digital games Dan Ayoub revealed that the studio is planning to continue working with the world Baldur’s Gate 3 after Larian leaves the title.

Following the game’s massive success, Ayoub revealed that there are “a lot of people very interested in Baldur’s Gate”. While no specifics were confirmed, the Hasbro executive revealed that the company is “working out our plans for the future” of the franchise.

Ayoub explained that Hasbro isn’t “in a rush” to reveal its long-term plans for Baldur’s Gate. “Actually, in pretty short order, we’re going to have some stuff to talk about around that,” the executive explained.

“We’ve got a lot of plans, a lot of different ways to go about it,” the Hasbro SVP explained. “We’re starting to think about, okay, yeah, we’re ready to start dipping toes a little bit and talking about a few things. And I think, in really short order, like I said, again, not to over-tease that point, we’re going to have some other things to talk about around that.”

Raising the creative bar

Speaking to IGN, Ayoub revealed that Hasbro doesn’t want to “shy down from a challenge” following Larian’s stellar work with Baldur’s Gate 3. While the fantastic studio’s work leaves massive shoes to fill, Hasbro is willing to continue raising the bar.

“I think anything that forces us to raise our creative bar, and developers love to have a high bar to go after, and I think we’ve actually seen the team push some really interesting ideas that they’re like, ‘Okay, we need to raise our bar. We need to go bigger on this.’ And things like that,” Ayoub said. “So, I think that’s our hope, right? We would keep raising the bar and everyone just tries to go a little higher.”

While Larian is leaving Baldur’s Gate 3 for newer pastures, the fanbase is far from done with the brilliant RPG. Right now, fans are creating massive custom campaigns that will continue to extend the life of the game for decades, but that doesn’t mean a new game from a new studio isn’t welcomed.

After all, Larian didn’t create Baldur’s Gate, that was BioWare, and it took almost two decades for the third game to actually happen. If another studio wants a stab at the D&D franchise, that’s more than okay, but there are some very, very, big shoes to fill.
