Nintendo has announced that it will launch fresh characters for Mario Tennis Aces after launch, including Koopa Troopa and Blooper.

While both characters will be free to download, there is a catch : You can only get them early if you take part in Mario Tennis Aces' online tournaments.

Koopa Troopa will be up for grabs from August 1, though you can gain early access from July if you give it your best in the online tournaments. Similarly, ink-spitting baddie Blooper can be downloaded in August for tournament participants and September for everyone else.

Nintendo is obviously going to start charging for online gaming come September, although with Mario Tennis Aces out before that, you won't need to pay for multiplayer just yet.

'If you participate in the online tournament that will be held in July after the game launches [and] if you earn enough points in the tournament, you can earn Koopa Troopa as a playable character early,' a Nintendo Treehouse employee confirmed.  'Otherwise, he will be available for everyone starting Aug. 1.'

Mario Tennis Aces will be released for the Switch on June 22.
