IGN reports that Konami president Fumiaki Tanaka has told Japan’s Nikkei BP website that many gamers are waiting for Metal Gear Solid 4 before buying a PlayStation 3. This could well be the case and it’s certainly a game Sony plans to capitalise on, offering a Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle in North America – there’s no announced plan for a similar bundle in Europe though.

Tanaka also noted that although much of the sales focus for the game will be on North America and Europe, Konami expects the title to sell a million units in Japan – a considerable number considering the console has yet to reach a user base of two million in Japan.

Other than the blockbuster release of Metal Gear Solid 4, Konami will also be tapping into its large catalogue of classic games, with remakes on the cards. Tanaka noted that download services, such as Wii Ware, will be an important market for these titles.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is scheduled for release exclusively for PlayStation 3 on June 12, 2008.
