Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning offers users a “taste of what’s in store” for the future Amalur-based MMO.

Speaking to Joystiq, general manager of Big Huge Games Sean Dunn explained the release of the single-player RPG functions as a launching pad for the Amalur MMO, currently titled Project Copernicus.

“All of the fiction that we pull for Reckoning comes from the intellectual property’s kind of library of information – you know, the giant R.A. Salvatore bible of story,” he stated.

He emphasised however that any future additions to the franchise need to make sense in the context of the universe.

“…and it has to be really high quality and it has to be really meaningful for the fans.”

The Amalur MMO has no current release window.

Curt Schilling, the owner of the studio, originally began his work in game development in order to create the Amalur MMO – not the single-player RPG. He’s well known as a massive EverQuest and World of Warcraft fan so it will be interesting to see how traditional an MMO Copernicus will be. Particularly at a point when games like Guild Wars 2 are challenging tradition.
