The primary focus of Rare, creator of titles including Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie and Conker’s Bad Fur Day, is now Kinect, newly appointed studio manager Scott Henson has told MCV.
“Kinect will be the main focus for Rare going forwards as it’s a very rich canvas,” Henson told MCV. “This is just the beginning of an experience that will touch millions of people.”
However, Henson still believes Rare will be pushing plenty of boundaries.
“My vision for Rare is the same today as it has always been – they have great vision, they are very creative and they take big bold risks to create groundbreaking experiences. We love taking risks and really pushing the boundaries of what people can do, and we’re really excited to see what it means to explore the boundaries of controller-free gaming,” he explained. “I think Rare’s future will continue to push those boundaries, continue to use Kinect as the basis for innovation.”
Kinect for Xbox 360 launches in the UK on November 10.
Having made its name working on Nintendo platforms with titles such as Donkey Kong, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Blast Corps, Jet Force Gemini, GoldenEye and Perfect Dark, a future in which Rare focuses on creating titles for a technology currently targeting the casual gamer is hard pill for the studio’s many fans to swallow.
Henson’s comments don’t, however, rule out the possibility of creating titles which will appeal to the hardcore fanbase. Who’s to say that Rare can’t produce a Kinect-enabled game which wins over the traditional gamer?
