According to data released by the NPD Group, Nintendo’s DS family of systems was the best-selling platform in the US in July – the number of units sold isn’t known.
Next came Microsoft’s Xbox 360, shifting 277,000 units over the month. This was down 37.5 per cent year on year, but remains the clear home console leader.
Xbox 360 continues to lead the US console market, selling more units than any other console for 13 of the past 14 months. Despite the sales slowdown, Microsoft states the Xbox 360 remains on track to have the biggest year in Xbox history.
“This was the first month that the Xbox 360 saw a year-over-year decline since December 2009. This is more of a reflection of robust sales last July, which was the biggest month for unit sales of the 360 in 2010 outside the holiday months (November and December),” noted NPD’s Anita Frazier. “Last year’s sales of the 360 hardware platform were driven by the introduction of the Kinect-ready slim form factor SKU.”
The Wii is reported to have sold 190,000 units (down 25 per cent year on year) and the PlayStation 3 148,000 units (down 31 per cent year on year). Figures for 3DS aren’t known, but the handheld is said to have performed worse than in June (114,000 units).
