With next-gen development said to be a very costly exercise, plus the additional cost of the Blu-Ray media, many have predicted that PlayStation 3 games will carry a higher than normal retail price. However, Sony Japan has released some pricing information for the PS3 titles out at or close to the console’s launch, and they’re cheaper than expected.

The cheapest of the titles are two mahjong games: Konami’s Mahjong Fight Club National Competition Edition at 5,229 yen, and Koei’s Mahjong Taikai IV at 5040 yen. Neither title is likely to be released in North America or Europe.

Next comes the SCE titles, Resistance: Fall of Man and Genji 2, both carrying a retail price of 5,980 yen. This is a surprisingly low price, given that 7,140 is the standard price for current-gen titles in Japan. The SEGA published SEGA Golf Club will arrive on launch day at 7.140 yen, and Sonic the Hedgehog will be released in December at the same price.

At the high end we have Ridge Racer 7 and Gundam Target in Sight, both retailing for 7,329 (a price Konami charges for current-gen titles). Finally comes Armored Core 4, arriving in Japan on December 14 for 8,190 yen, which although comparatively high is the same price as some PS2 games in the series.

These prices don’t necessarily reflect the pricing for the rest of the world (it would be a shock if they do), but as a guide the lowest price games (excluding mahjong titles) work out at approximately £27 and the highest at £37.
