Apple will ship not one but two new iterations of the iPad in 2012, reports DigiTimes, with the iPad 3 hitting retailers as soon as March.

The iPad 3 will come with a QXGA (1,536×2,048 pixels) display and a longer battery life, but reports suggest its innards won’t offer much in the way of processing improvements. The launch will, however, enable Apple to drop the price of iPad 2 to $399.

Things really start to get tasty when iPad 4 launches in October, claim sources. The fourth generation tablet will boast heavily updated hardware specs and apps, ready to compete with the expected array of new Android and Windows 8-based tablets.

Without much in the way of hardware improvements we hope the iPad 3 doesn’t find itself feeling slightly sluggish as a result of needing to power that higher resolution display.
