id Software’s iOS version of RAGE – which VideoGamer.com awarded 7/10 last year – has been “really successful” for the developer.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at a Bethesda showcase in Utah last week, design director Matt Hooper confirmed that the studio has been delighted with the bite-sized game’s performance: “For us, for the amount of effort it took, and what we were trying to do, it really hit the mark and it’s been really successful.”

When asked why the iOS game was conceived in the first place, Hooper revealed that “it was really just something John [Carmack] wanted to do – he put that version of id Tech 5, that kind of technology with streaming and a little higher fidelity environments, and we made it fun. And you can’t beat the price!”

RAGE on the iPhone was clearly enough of a success for id Software to look into making another one, with the studio confirming to VG247 that a second iOS game is in the works.

Does iOS and digital distribution represent a change in the industry, then? “Digital distribution is going to change the marketplace somewhat,” said Hooper. “Maybe with different price points. I’m not sure exactly how it will change, other than your ability to get a game very quickly.”

“It’s kind of already opened up with things like Xbox LIVE Arcade and those types of titles – you can have them at different price points, you can do some old-school things that you couldn’t necessarily do in a full featured games. The iOS is kind of changing things, there’s things offered on Steam that are just different. I think it opens up a lot of possibilities for different types of developers. There will always be a place, at least in the foreseeable future, for the AAA developers to make the big blockbuster titles – that’s going to be there. But there’s other possibilities,” said Hooper.

RAGE is out for 360, PS3, and PC on September 16
