Despite having the phenomenally successful, multi-million selling Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare under its belt, developer Infinity Ward still feels like the “underdog” that’s making games only “us and our friends will like”.
That’s according to community manager Robert Bowling, who told VideoGamer.com Infinity Ward feels like a band putting out their “first crappy CD” as it prepares to unleash Modern Warfare 2 upon the gaming world.
Bowling’s comments are sure to surprise many, given the cast iron certain hit that Modern Warfare is sure to be.
Some analysts even reckon it’ll be the best-selling game of all time, when it’s released worldwide on November 10.
When asked if he felt Modern Warfare 2 will eclipse the achievements of CoD 4, Bowling replied: “I hope so. We never said, or allowed ourselves to get distracted by, those types of expectations. We just focus on making a game that’s fun and accessible that we want to play, that we’re going to be proud of when it comes out.
“We never really worry about all like, all the business stuff, and the stuff about, oh the biggest launch of all time, because that’s not really what we’re aiming for. We don’t set out and say hey we want to make the biggest game that’s ever been made, or the highest seller. We don’t really care about that.
“It doesn’t matter if 13 people are playing or 13 million people are playing. We want to make a game that’s just fun for whoever’s playing it. It’s hard to believe, but, honestly, we still feel like that underdog who’s making good games that we think just us and our friends like!
“It’s kind of like when you’re in a band, you know? You put out your first CD and it’s crappy, but you and your mum love it. And then you get signed to a major and it takes a while for that to set in. And I think it’s because we’re just focussed on what we’re doing. We don’t get involved in all that stuff. We’re just like, okay let’s just make a game and play it.”
We can’t help but feel that once Modern Warfare 2 comes out, Infinity Ward won’t feel like the underdog any more.
