Fans of triangle intersection ray tracers should look away now. Speaking on the official Bethesda blog, id co-founder and technical director John Carmack has dropped the bombshell that the studio “won’t be rendering with a triangle intersection ray tracer on the next gen”.

We’re just as baffled about what that means as you probably are. Easier to digest is news that Carmack is most excited about “the data management and work flow through the development process”. That’s not exactly a headline nugget, but important to game development as the whole process becomes increasingly complex.

The games industry legend also shared his thoughts on the state of computing today compared to what it was when he entered the industry.

“I find myself continuously in awe of the progress that has been made in computing, and what we can do with it,” he told the blog. “I am working on games today using over a million times the processing power of my first game, and my cell phone can do things that no graphics system on earth could do when I started. Processing, graphics, networking, and mobility are all still surging ahead, and there are plenty of exiting things to look forward to.”

While the next generation of console hardware is a few years away, you’ve got to think that a future engine from John Carmack will be right on the bleeding edge, pushing that hardware to its limit – triangle intersection ray tracer rendering or not.
