Fumito Ueda, creator of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, has left Sony and will complete work on The Last Guardian on a contract basis, Sony has confirmed to Gamasutra.

Confirmation of Ueda’s departure from Sony follows strong rumours from late last month, although Sony was unwilling to confirm Ueda’s employment status at that time.

Sony has said that Ueda is “committed to completing” The Last Guardian, which is the lauded game creator’s first project since 2005’s Shadow of the Colossus and only his third game since joining Sony in 1997.

Rumours have indicated that Ueda will embark on personal projects once The Last Guardian is complete – whenever that happens to be.

Ueda’s departure follows news of a similar exit for The Last Guardian producer Yoshifusa Hayama.
