As an added incentive to get a copy of Gears of War 3 on launch week, Microsoft and Epic have resorted to dangling a big shiny carrot – golden skins for the Lancer and Hammerburst.

Anyone who plays a game of Gears of War 3 during the launch week – between September 20 and September 26 – will unlock the weapon skins permanently, which can be used in the game’s multiplayer modes.

What, exactly, do golden weapons do? Nothing – they’re purely cosmetic. But they’re also gold. Gold.

Microsoft and Epic have also released over a dozen premium weapon skins for Gears of War 3. These start at 240 Microsoft Points, and go all the way up to a whopping 3600 Microsoft Points (£30.84/$45.00) for the entire collection. They are also purely cosmetic.

Outside of the promotion, the only other way to obtain the golden Lancer and Hammerburst is to already have them unlocked in Gears of War 2, which means owning a limited edition copy of the second game for the Lancer and having pre-ordered it for the Hammerburst.

VideoGamer.com awarded Gears of War 3 9/10 in its review. Watch our conveniently embedded video review to find out why.
