One of the main factors behind Horizon: Zero Dawn’s delay into 2017 was down to the fact that it’s “such a big game”, director Mathijs de Jonge has said.

Speaking about the setback with GameSpot, de Jonge explained that Guerrilla would be using the extra few months for “polish”.

“We have this open world,” he said. “It’s very big. We have a lot of quests; we have a lot of different regions as well. We have a lot of different Machines. Just playtesting this, it’s very, very time-consuming. We have so many components. We just want to raise the quality on the different areas.”

He continued: “[The delay was] mainly because it’s such a big game. We are a team of 200 people now, but there’s just a lot of content we need to look at and evaluate and keep improving.”

Horizon: Zero Dawn had originally been due to launch later this year, but was pushed back to February 2017 earlier this month. At the time, Guerrilla boss Herman Hulst explained that the delay “wasn’t an easy choice” and that the developer wanted to “ensure that Horizon Zero Dawn lives up to the visuals and gameplay quality that our games are known for”.

Horizon: Zero Dawn launches on PS4 on February 28, 2017.
