Epic has told users to retain their save files if they want to access the shiny golden Retro Lancer or Thrashball Cole skin unlocked from the Gears of War 3 beta in the finished game.

The 507mb Gears of War 3 beta executable file, however, can now be deleted.

The four-week Gears of War 3 beta encouraged its users to play throughout the duration of the beta to access exclusive unlocks in the finished retail game. “We wanted to put these little carrots out there,” said executive producer Rod Fergusson in an interview with VideoGamer.com in March.

VideoGamer.com also worked out that the gold-plated Retro Lancer takes 16 hours to unlock.

The Gears of War 3 servers will go offline today at 10am GMT.

Gears of War 3 launches for the 360 on September 20.

I was up until 2am this morning trying to unlock the Thrashball Cole skin for retail. Pearson says it wasn’t supposed to be like writing an essay, where you leave it until the last minute and then go mad with stress.

Pearson also wants me to remind everybody he unlocked the Golden Retro Lancer and that I didn’t.
