If you have a souped up gaming PC and you’re wondering why you’re finding The First Descendant so easy, it’s probably because of a bug that lets you deal more DPS thanks to your frame rate.
“Better grind for better hardware irl to get over the framerate paywall,” one user writes full of jest. This issue was first discovered by YouTube Ryechews Games who implores people to “Change your settings, change your damage.” His video displays the differences in damage per second that certain weapons produce, all dependant on frame rate.
For reference, at 30FPS with the Tamer it will take 18.83 seconds to empty a magazine of 190 bullets, whereas above 60 it will only take 15.69s. The difference in DPS is calculated as 20%, which is staggering when you really consider that. Thankfully, The Last Descendant is a primarily PvE based game, so it’s unlikely that many will feel hard-done by this one.
One of the fundamental teachings in game development is to use delta time rather than a constant tick timer. This means that calculations are performed at a constant rate (the time between each tick) rather than on each actual new frame. This is an issue that Destiny has faced before too. Unfortunately for those who play on high-end PCs, it worked in reverse there, with better PCs dealing less damage.
Nerfing your The First Descendant graphics to hit a lower frame rate seems like a much better option than paying-to-win, although it should be noted that you will receive more damage too.
