Marvel Rivals continues to dominate the hero shooter scene, with players employing a variety of techniques to gain victory in its fast-paced, team-based encounters. From coordinated team-ups like the Hulk and Wolverine’s destructive Fastball Special to long-range precision strikes with Hawkeye and Black Widow, the game’s broad cast of Vanguards, Duelists, and Strategists provides limitless tactical options.

Competitive players are adjusting to Season 1.5’s meta, with some swearing by the 2-2-2 composition (two heroes from each class), while others experiment with riskier configurations, such as stacking three Duelists to overwhelm opponents with raw damage. As the community refines its strategy to climbing the ranks, social media is buzzing with recommendations, ranging from Magneto’s shield tactics to Luna Snow’s crowd control abilities.

Despite this innovation, teams continue to face a recurring difficulty, particularly in single queue matchups, when communication is limited and team chemistry can weaken. Players report disappointing losses even when individual performances excel, indicating a persistent issue that’s making them lose matches, and it’s the lack of Vanguards in the match.

Marvel Rivals players report solo tanking is making them lose matches

Marvel Rivals players are reporting that the lack of Vanguard roles across Quick Play and Competitive matches is making them lose games more often. One such player named Kevuin17 shared on Reddit how they face recurring issues of players not wanting to play Vanguards across matches.

“I’m a tank main and I’m so damn tired of solo tanking. Every f****ng game”, says the player. “I really enjoy tanks and especially like Cap and Venom with a bit of Hulk and Thor but I am forced to go Strange or Mag [Magneto] because I always solo tank. Even in games where it’s 1-3-2 and one of the DPS is willing to switch, they go third healer.”

Role lock is one of the much-heated conversations in Marvel Rivals, as devs insisted on eliminating the classic feature often used in hero shooters to balance team composition. However some players believe that some sort of role lock would have allowed better team selection and would have avoided situations where no healer or no tanks are present in a line up.

A similar situation arose for Kevuin, who wrote, “Yesterday I was playing and I just gave up. I hovered Cap, waited for people to pick, and inevitably it was always 3 dps, so I typed 2 tanks or no tanks. As you can imagine, no one switched. Ever. So, I spent the day playing Spidey and dabbling with some Hawkeye.”

“I don’t get it. Is it that people think you can’t get flashy scoreboard stats and no kills? If so, try Venom or Thor. They are just DPS disguised as tanks. I almost always have one of the top elims and final hits. Is it a lack of options? I genuinely don’t get it. Tanks are fun, especially when there are 2 or more”, concluded the player with their statements.

The comments section in the subreddit told a similar story where tank mains are sharing such scenarios where teams often struggle with heroes who want to play as Vanguards in Marvel Rivals, with some saying simply that there aren’t any as impressive as the DPS roster. While the issue surrounding lack of a variety of Vanguards has popped up in the community before, players are hoping Season 2 will bring more tanks, rather than flooding its already populated DPS meta.
