Forget GamesMaster. Forget Time Commanders. Forget Quantum Break’s live action sequences. This is how the world of TV and games may come together in the future, according to the BBC.
A new short film by the Beeb’s R&D department has visualised how a multiplayer game could be integrated with live TV, and how the players themselves could become the game’s stars. Think of it as a version of Destiny that stars you and your friends and that’s being broadcast live to the world, and you have some idea of what it may involve.
“Multiplayer Broadcasting blends live TV shows with the interactivity of online games by placing audience avatars and presenters into a shared virtual world,” says the BBC. “Not only does this give audience members a chance to interact and communicate with live performers, but they are no longer limited by real world locations. We see it as the next iteration of audience participation shows in a broadcast-VR enabled future.”
It’s worth bearing in mind that the pretend show, The Watch, is just that. The BBC doesn’t currently have any solid plans to broadcast anything like it, but says that the experiment will help it “identify the technical challenges involved in making this experience a reality”.
