After mowing down hundreds of thousands of bots in Arrowhead’s multiplayer game, Helldivers 2 players are convinced the terrifying Automatons are actually people. Similar to the iconic Doctor Who enemy, The Cyberman, there could be more to Helldivers’ robots than what meets the eye.
Gamers enjoying the new shooter have wanted missions with bugs and robots to shoot, so finding out they might be part human, aka cyborgs, might make them uncomfortable. Then again, these secret dark tones have been a part of the series for a while, which hasn’t stopped players from getting excited over silly things like Halloween events.
Are the enemy robots cyborgs?
One user in the Helldivers 2 subreddit noticed that some of the factory machinery in the game is filled with blood and body parts. This user reiterates the game’s message that these automatons are all metal and 100% not human. Of course, this is a self-aware post since Super-Earth has been portrayed as a secretly evil organization that makes its soldiers clean up dirty work.
As a humanoid threat, the terrifying Automatons are heavily designed after the human skeleton. While the typical bot troops are incredibly thin in their metal chassis, they could be hiding human brains beneath their shells.
Replies to this post have been humorous, with another user following the game’s byline and claiming these robots are run by “biofuel,” Another player said that they could just use the bugs if that were the case, so this usage is pretty mysterious. Super Earth has dark baggage to clean up, but pretending to be unaware is pretty funny.
With teases of space battles and so much more, players won’t mind being led on by Super Earth like this. Questions about morality are interesting, but this is a multiplayer shooter and the best parts are blasting away these giant bugs without thinking too much.
Answers in the next major update?
Considering how Helldivers 2 is an ever-evolving game with an ongoing narrative, it will be interesting to see if Super Earth reacts to this. Most fans are expecting a convoluted cover story that will make them laugh, which is pretty realistic for the capitalist organization. Only time will tell if the game will ever cover how evil Super Earth is.
