Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead has been very clear with the game’s heavy influence from the Halo franchise. From the design of its titular soldiers to a number of weapons in the game, the frantic multiplayer title takes a lot from the flagship Xbox IP.

In the latest update for Arrowhead’s surprise hit, new lore was added that takes a cute jab at Halo’s iconic Master Chief. Alongside a fresh slew of buffs, even making the Jump Pack a useful tool, the game made a cute little reference to its biggest inspiration. (Well, outside of Starship Troopers.)

Helldivers 2 takes on Master Chief

In the latest lore drop for Arrowhead’s shooter, it’s revealed that a skilled operative has been tasked with sabotaging production of more powerful Automaton Hulk Bruisers.

This secretive super soldier has traveled across the cosmos, destroying Automaton Fabricators and fighting back developments of the robots’ Hulk Bruiser forms.

“Today, still wanted by the Automatons, they survive as a soldier of fortune,” reads the character’s lore entry. “If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can enlist… John Helldiver.”

Obviously, this is a tongue-in-chief reference to Halo’s Master Chief, who’s birth name is John. Over the decades, fans have often called the character “John Halo” just for gits and shiggles.

Silent Hill isn’t a problem anymore

Alongside the little reference to Master Chief, the latest lore drop also references the newly released Silent Hill 2. In a smaller piece of lore, is revealed that General Brasch not only went to a “foggy hillside town”, but came back unscathed.

After all, if you’re patriotic enough to the government of Super Earth, nothing bad can ever happen to you. Well, unless you count being mauled to death by a swarm of alien bugs.
