One of the more unusual stories to come from GDC is that of Chris Hecker. During a developer rant session the Maxis developer offered his views on the Wii, calling the console a “piece of s***!, complaining of its lack of processing power and criticising Nintendo for not making artistic games.
A day later and Hecker took time before he delivered a presentation on the Spore animation system to offer a full apology.
“I was trying to be thought provoking and entertaining and fun, and a lot of the stuff went too far over the top on the entertaining and fun side, so that it was no longer thought provoking, just inflammatory. And in the process I hurt a bunch of people I care about. And so, I want to apologise now,” Hecker said.
Hecker also made it clear that his comments were his own views and did not represent the views of EA and Maxis. He also apologised to his co-workers, who he said had been upset by his comments.
“I do not think that the Wii is a piece of s***,” Hecker said, and went on to applaud Nintendo for the Wii’s innovative controller, user interface and affordable price.
