Hatred, the controversial title in which players take on the role of a villain intent on killing innocent civilians and police officers, has been awarded an Adults Only rating by the Entertainment Software Rating Board, reports GamesIndustry.biz.

“Based on the content depicted in Hatred and the overall context of the game, ESRB assigned an AO (Adults Only) rating with content descriptors that include Intense Violence, Blood and Gore, and Strong Language,” explained an ESRB rep.

Already pulled then reinstated on Steam Greenlight, Hatred will now find its possible sales avenues restricted. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have a policy to deny the sale of AO rated games for their platforms, and a large portion of US retailers also refuse to stock games with this rating.

Valve’s Steam platform has no policy preventing the sale of AO games, but currently has no such games listed for sale.
