The programming guide for the 2008 Game Developers Conference has revealed that Harmonix is working on a new title which will not rely on dedicated peripherals like Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

At GDC 2008 Harmonix senior designer Chris Foster will be giving a 60-minute lecture at a conference titled “Your Music is the Game: Designing the OTHER Project at Harmonix“.

According to conference description the new project will be a bit different to the studio’s history of “beatmatch” games – users tap buttons to match onscreen beats.

Beats would not be authored by tech-savvy musicians,” notes the conference description, “but would instead be algorithmically generated, and the game would lack the dedicated peripherals that were critical to the success of the Guitar Hero series.

Foster’s conference will take place at the 2008 Games Developers Conference, to be held in San Francisco on February 18-22.
