The upcoming Halo TV show will feature Master Chief as the lead character in an all-original story, Showtime's David Nevins and Gary Levine confirmed during a panel at the TCA press tour.

The duo confirmed the news during a brief chinwag with GameSpot, which will no doubt please fans of Microsoft's alien-stomping franchise. However, there's the obvious question regarding what they'll do about Master Chief's face; he's always wearing mask, after all.

According to Levine however, this will be a major talking point of the Halo TV show.

'It is a key question and an important part of our series is all I'll say,' he said.

'It is futuristic space-based science fiction,' Levine continued. 'It is not fantasy. I think there's been one iconic franchise in my opinion in the history of television in that category and that's Star Trek. Probably 10 or 12 of the top 20 movies of all time are futuristic sci-fi and, weirdly, television hasn't turned up those kinds of franchises.'

It was also pointed out that showrunner Kyle Killen is not adapting one of the Halo video games, but instead crafting something totally fresh for Master Chief's TV debut.

'It is a new story but we are being incredibly respectful of the canon,' added Levine. 'We are working with the Microsoft/343 people to make sure we don't violate any of that.'

Meanwhile, developer 343 Industries is busy working on the next chapter in the franchise for Xbox One, Halo Infinite.

The team is being joined by SkyBox Labs for the much-anticipated sequel, which is being powered by an all-new game engine.
