Some deeply interesting Halo 3 rumours have surfaced on the net this week, with a poster on the Team Xbox message board claiming to have some insider info on Bungie’s new game. So, you may take the following with a hefty pinch of salt…

It seems that the new game will have a darker, grittier tone to it and the opening scenes will be set thousands of years before the original game. Perhaps we’ll get to see the creation of the Halo itself.

The most exciting titbit is the multiplayer news. Bungie are apparently “attempting to maintain an online co-operative component for the campaign supporting more than two players at once,” which would be superb news if true. It’s a feature that fans of the series have been requesting for some time. On top of this Halo 3 “will have a multiplayer mode which pits players against bots in scenarios that are directly connected to the story of the game.” All very exciting, if it’s true of course.

Old maps are also rumoured to be making a return in the form of a re-worked Sidewinder, Zanzibar and Hang Em High. It’s also hoped that Bungie will be able to get around 50 players supported on some of these maps over Xbox Live. There is also apparently both a mapmaker and moviemaker in the works for use over Xbox Live as well. All very exciting.

It needs to be kept in mind that this is all conjecture, but if even half of these rumours are true, Bungie could be onto something really special.
