While some people are excitedly playing as much Halo 3 as possible before the beta closes, some are spending their time scouring the beta’s source code to uncover new info about the final game. The clever members of the modding community have discovered a host of new info including details on weapons, vehicles and game modes.

Hidden away in the source code is a bunch of on-screen text, one fragment of which reveals a game mode which has been on Halo players’ wanted lists for some time: co-op over Xbox Live.

Only 2 players may play split-screen coop on the same Xbox 360 console. The party size is too large to start the game. Up to 4 players may play coop on Xbox Live or System Link,” reads the message.

Obviously this hasn’t been confirmed and the text could end up being a red herring, but it’s certainly exciting to see it there.

The source code has also revealed a bunch of other exciting stuff. Don’t read on if you want to avoid spoilers.

New weapons:

Flamethrower

Claymore Grenade

New equipment:

Instacover

Smoke

Jammer

New vehicles:

Chopper

Pelican

Shadow

There’s also a new game mode called Infection, in which players are Humans or Flood and score points for either killing Flood or infecting Humans. Finally there’s some info regarding the player rankings, with the highest achievable being Killpocalypse and Killionaire, instead of Double Kill and Triple Kill.

Halo 3 is scheduled for release across Europe on September 26, with the online multiplayer beta set to close on the morning of June 11.
