As had been predicted by analysts far and wide, Halo 3 took the North American video game market by storm during its first 12-days on release. According to the NPD Group’s retail sales figures for the September period (also includes around a week of sales for October) Halo 3 sold 3.3 million units, over 3 million units more than Wii Play in second place. The PlayStation 3’s top selling game, Heavenly Sword, only managed to place at No.10 with 139,000 units.
Individual sales figures of each of the three Halo 3 versions were not revealed, although each version sold enough individually to claim the top spot.
Sales of the Xbox 360 console appear to have benefited from the Halo 3 effect with 528,000 units sold for the September period. Despite the huge increase in sales, it was only marginally enough to claim victory over the Wii (501,000) and Nintendo DS (496,000).
With 501,000 units sold over the month, the Wii enjoyed its most successful period ever, beating the November 2006 launch figures of 476,000 units. The same success can’t be claimed by Sony, with the PlayStation 3 selling only 119,000 units. The PSP, thanks to the newly released Slim & Lite, had a strong month with 285,000 units sold.
