There are approximately 12.5 million paying Xbox LIVE Gold members, according to Microsoft’s Dennis Durkin, head of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business.

“Of our 25 million members, about half of them are subscribers to the business and pay us about $60 a year for that,” Durkin stated at the Credit Suisse Annual Technology Conference. “So it’s a very large business for us and for our partners.”

Durkin also revealed that revenue generated from digital transactions is greater than that made from LIVE subscription services.

Those 12.5 million subscribers generate an astonishing $750 million and Microsoft says that forms the lesser share of total LIVE revenues. It’s no wonder Sony decided to introduce a subscription service.
