While a teaser image had been posted on the Steam news page, no one expected Half-Life 2 Deathmatch to arrive so soon. If you log into Steam, you will see that it is available to download now, along with the Half-Life 2: Software Developer’s Kit.

At the moment deathmatch seems to be pretty simple, only offering two maps, but includes support for up to 32-players. It is, however, currently pretty hard to find a big game that doesn’t suffer from lag, but this is sure to change as more people download the add-on and more servers become available.

Valve has also announced a competition looking for map makers. The top entry will receive $5,000, while two runners up will receive $3,000 each.
