While Half-Life 3 is allegedly in development for real this time, modders are still having a hell of time playing with the bones of Half-Life 2. While some are bringing their massive conversion mods to VR with a new lick of paint, the new SourceWorld mod takes Valve’s cinematic masterpiece and turns it into a roguelite assassination game.

SourceWorld is an awesome Half-Life 2 conversion

Released in demo form on Steam during the ongoing Steam Next Fest celebrations, SourceWorld is described as a “dungeon crawler Half-Life 2 mod with immersive sim elements”.

In the total conversion, players take on the role of a “multiverse explorer” who is tasked with running raids across procedurally-generated universes. As with every roguelite, there’s a large degree of randomness to your runs with levels that change in size, theme and difficulty as your explore the multiverse.

Every level will see the player jump into a new randomised universe, unlock new weapons with “tweaked” controls to be more modern and stuff as much loot as they can into their dense inventory system. You can even find upgrades to improve your character via a skill tree, allowing you to continue to grow between runs.

Additionally, players will come across NPCs with RPG dialogue choices that will affect how you play. There’s even sprawling hub environments that change as you explore other universes with your actions leading to “unforeseen consequences”.

While Half-Life 2 may be 21-years-old, modders are still using Valve’s brilliant engine and the bones of the PC gaming masterpiece to make incredible new experiences. From the brilliant chaos of GMOD to the awful Cinematic Mod, there’s still an extremely active community crafting some truly amazing games in the PC game.

Now, will we get a third game in the series sometime soon? All signs point to yes. However, considering Valve’s penchant for perfection, especially with its flagship franchise, it may take a long time until we see Gordon Freeman again.
