One of the biggest memes in gaming history is the existence of Half-Life 3, but it seems that Valve may finally be tackling the long-awaited third game. In a recent interview, Evgeniy Evstratiy, an artist who worked on Valve’s recent game Deadlock, confirmed that Half-Life 3 is in development at the studio.
Speaking on Russian gaming podcast CG Voices, Evstratiy said that they’ve “seen the room where Half-Life 3 is made”, according to an English translation. The artist also revealed that this is not the first time Valve has attempted to bring the third game to fruition, hinting at many scrapped versions over the last decade.
“I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this or not, but I was in the room where they make Half-Life 3,” the artist said. “However, I didn’t see the actual development itself; I just saw the office, the computers, the whiteboards. And, as I understood it, making HL3 isn’t their first attempt.”
Evstratiy explained that Valve’s recent work on the third game “is not a guarantee that they will actually made/release it”. However, work is being actively done at the iconic PC gaming studio to give fans a third game.
This isn’t the first time Half-Life 3 has popped up in recent discussions. In fact, just recently renowned Valve leaker Gabe Follower—who leaked the existence of Deadlock before its release—stated that the third game in the series was in a playtesting phase.
Known internally as HLX, the game is allegedly in an “optimisation” phase and will include new technology such as realistic deformable props, advanced NPC interactions, complex enemy AI and a dynamic hair system. Additionally, Half-Life: Alyx’s teased Zombie Gorilla is expected to be an actual enemy.
It’s been a long time coming for the third game in the series. It’s now been 21 years since Half-Life 2 and 18 years since Episode 2 released. However, considering the sheer amount of hype for the series’ VR spin-off Half-Life: Alyx, it’s clear that fans crave more. Hopefully, in the next few years, we’ll actually see something.
