For a game that’s only been in Early Access for a few days now, the level of polish and attention to detail in Hades 2 has been extraordinary so far. Despite all the very well deserved praise, there has still been various issues–both in terms of balancing and bugs–which Supergiant are keen to iron out.

Amir Rao, the Studio Director at Supergiant, and the one responsible for tuning the game to a tee, recently mentioned in an interview with Game Informer that at the moment he’s “a little worried about the Hephaestus boons.” This was in response to being asked which boon he would pick between Zeus, Aphrodite and Hephaestus, which he followed with “as someone in charge of making sure they’re all equally viable, I have a little bit of work to do on those.”

The community sentiment so far–one which I wholeheartedly echoed in a piece saying that the only thing holding Hades 2 back at the moment is its boon design–has been that Boons, specifically Hephaestus’, are quite overpowered. At the same time, others have been criticised criticised for not being viable enough. Zeus’ and Aphrodite’s, for example.

I will say that even though Hephaestus’ Boons feel like you’re playing on God Mode at times, it has been incredibly fun discovering the different synergies that you can create, and I paired his offerings with that of Aphrodite’s and breezed through the early sections of my run. While it is a fun playstyle, it is slightly out of touch with the rest of the game’s mechanics.

When we eventually do see an update for Hades 2, it will likely roll out with these adjustments to the Boon mechanics. We don’t know exactly when to expect the first update, so that’s anybody’s money. The interview also illuminates that a sixth weapon is going to be introduced into the game, which you can expect to see before the final 1.0 release. This is going to have a definitive impact on the best weapons in Hades 2 so far, and it could end up balancing out the boon system even more.
