Activision’s Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock sits above Black Ops as the highest grossing game in US history.

Since its release in 2007 the music rhythm game has grossed $830.9 million. It’s an impressive figure, but one which might be toppled by Call of Duty: Black Ops. The biggest FPS of last year currently sits at $787.4 million, which isn’t bad considering it only hit stores in November 2010.

Of the top 10 titles, five are published by Activision, four are from Nintendo and one from MTV Games. Six of the games shipped with or use a peripheral.

The top 10 (as published by CNBC)

1. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock $830.9 million

2. Call of Duty: Black Ops $787.4 million

3. Wii Fit (inc: Balance Board) $736.6 million

4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 $713.6 million

5. Rock Band $670.7 million

6. Wii Play (inc: Wii Remote)

7. Guitar Hero World Tour

8. Wii Fit Plus

9. Mario Kart Wii (inc: Wii Wheel)

Given the strong sales for Activision and Nintendo titles it’s no surprise that those two are currently sitting pretty as the top dogs in the games industry at the moment.
