Now 11-years-old, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V has been ported to PC, Xbox One and PS4 and even Xbox Series and PS5. However, the game has surprisingly been absent on mobile and Nintendo Switch, despite the series’ rampant success on those platforms. The ingenuity of fans strikes again, as GTA V on Android is now running great on modern flagship phones.

GTA V on Android is a reality… kinda

Using the PC emulator platform Winlator, GTA V on Android now plays on modern Android smartphones without any glitches, stutter or lag. Highly dependant on your device, the amazing open-world game can now be played on a small phone instead of a massive Steam Deck or a gaming laptop.

Winlator is a form of PC emulator that allows users to install games designed for Windows PCs. It’s a finicky tool, and one that only really works well on Snapdragon-based devices, but its evolved massively over the past few years.

For many, getting GTA V running on Android has been a holy grail project. Despite its age, the open-world game has struggled to run on the emulator. However, with the latest version of Winlator and new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 hardware, the game is now running flawlessly on mobile.

Running at max settings, the PC game hits a low of 45fps on powerful Android phones, but can hit almost 100fps in some scenes. However, just running the game without huge lurches or graphical glitches is a huge step forward for the game.

No official port

The only way GTA V on Android would be any better than this is the release of an official port by Rockstar Games. Unfortunately, despite the massive success of older GTA games on mobile, Rockstar seems unwilling to port the game to other platforms.

In other GTA news, Rockstar is hard at work on GTA 6. Scheduled to release in 2025, the game is still on track to launch on Xbox Series and PS5. Unfortunately, no PC version of the game has been announced, but it will likely release in the future.
