The developers had initially drawn the community’s ire due to their lack of urgency in addressing the threatening in-game problem. Luckily, Rockstar Games have finally released the much-needed patch to address the security issue that plagued their servers previously. Read on to find out the exact updates that were made by the developers.

GTA Online PC 1.66 Patch Notes

Security

  • Implemented a new data protocol in GTA Online to improve the security of network sessions and player-to-player messaging
  • Fixed an issue that could result in a player’s GTA Online experience being modified by a third party, including:
    • Altering GTA$ balance, RP level, Bad Sport status, and other player stats
    • Manipulation of players being kicked or crashed

Game Stability and Performance

  • General stability improvements

For those unfamiliar with the situation, a large number of GTA Online players originally fell victim to an “extreme exploit” that allowed cheaters to remotely alter a player’s stats and permanently corrupt their accounts. Users that had frequently been targeted were those that turned off their firewall to host a lobby for their friends. As expected, this made their computers susceptible to attacks, which is exactly what happened.

Now that the fix is live, however, player experience has seemingly been much smoother as none of the previous exploits have been reported at the time of writing. Unfortunately, regular cheating is still rampant in the game so those waiting for a fix on that front may have to wait a little longer. Hopefully, though, Rockstar’s latest update has fully taken care of its glaring system problem and that it won’t be a recurring issue moving forward.
