Speaking to EGM (reported by Massively), Rockstar founder Sam Houser has revealed an interest in creating a GTA MMO in the future, noting such a project “is very, very doable and is a very, very compelling proposition”.

Houser is also reported to have labelled a mainstream subscription-based MMO for a console as “the Holy Grail”.

Don’t get too excited though, Rockstar doesn’t currently have any plans to take GTA into the massively multiplayer online realm, with Houser citing problems integrating the GTA gameplay with a persistent world. He also expressed concerns that such a game could result in thousands of players simply running around shooting each other, which isn’t a compelling MMO experience.

The success of Realtime Worlds’ All Points Bulletin could go some way to sway Rockstar’s future plans for the GTA franchise, itself a GTA alike game set in a persistent online world.
