The Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto 5 will be region-free, except for the Japanese version, Rockstar has confirmed.

It means that all versions of GTA 5 will be playable anywhere in the world except Japan. The Japanese version is region-locked to Japanese consoles.

Unlike PlayStation 3, where all disc-based games are region-free, publishers determine the region-lock restrictions for individual Xbox 360 titles.

Rockstar region-locked Grand Theft Auto 4, but released Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire region-free.

If you’re looking to purchase DLC, however, Rockstar recommends that you “buy and play games that are designated for your country to avoid potential problems with DLC region-compatibility”.

In addition to confirming region restrictions, Rockstar also announced language support for each region and format. The European PlayStation 3 version will include support for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese and Polish, with the North American version including English, French, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Traditional Chinese and Latin American Spanish.

All Xbox 360 versions, meanwhile, (bar Japan) will include support English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Korean, Traditional Chinese and Latin American Spanish.

GTA 5 launches on Xbox 360 and PS3 on September 17.
