Grand Theft Auto 5 offers the largest open-world ever created by Rockstar – but according to Rockstar Games vice-president Dan Houser, it might also be one of the longest games ever made.

Discussing the possibility of turning the franchise into a film with The Guardian, Houser asked whether a game like GTA 5 could be condensed into two hours, given that it offers “a big open-world experience that’s 100 hours long”.

“There’s still plenty of kudos in doing a film, but you shouldn’t ever do anything in your life for kudos,” said Houser. “It’s much easier to imagine GTA as a TV series, as the form is closer, but I still think we’d be losing too much to ever actually do it.

“We’ve got this big open-world experience that’s 100 hours long, and that gives players control over what they do, what they see, and how they see it. A world where you can do everything from rob a bank to take a yoga lesson to watch TV, all in your own time. How do you condense that into a two-hour or 12-hour experience where you take away the main things: player agency and freedom?”

As well as being one of the biggest games, GTA 5 is also thought to be one of the most expensive, with a reported £170m budget.

GTA 5 launches on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 next Tuesday, September 17. And though it’s expected to break opening week records, if you’ve yet to pre-order, don’t panic – copies of the game will be available to non-pre-order customers day one in-store.
