Grand Theft Auto 5 has achieved first day sell-through of more than $800 million worldwide, Take-Two has announced.

Not only does this make GTA 5 the most successful launch in the history of Take-Two and the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but most likely the biggest launch ever in the video game industry.

The $800 million figure, which is based on internal estimates by the publisher, eclipses the $500 million total of Black Ops 2 last November – although this was based on sales in North America and the UK only.

“All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response to Grand Theft Auto V. Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry’s new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence,” said Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two.

Yesterday it was reported that GTA 5 had broken the day one UK sales record, shifting 1.57 million copies in just 24 hours.

GTA Online launches for Xbox 360 and PS3 on October 1.
