Reuters reports that it will be the PlayStation 3 which gains most new users thanks to Grand Theft Auto IV, despite Microsoft’s best efforts to make its Xbox 360 the console of choice for GTA fans.
With sales expected to top 10 million units this year, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter believes the game will spur two million additional sales of the PlayStation 3, compared to only one million additional sales of the Xbox 360.
BMO Capital Markets analyst Edward Williams shares this view, noting: “So many people who owned the PS2 went into PlayStation family because of ‘GTA’. The release of ‘GTA4’ could expedite their decision to upgrade.”
However, IDC analyst Billy Pidgeon believes that for gamers who own both consoles the Xbox 360 version will be the most attractive option.
“Online is such a strong part of the game and Microsoft has done such a great job of developing the online community, so for people who own multiple consoles, they will buy it for the 360,” said Pidgeon.
Grand Theft Auto IV will be released for Xbox 360 and PS3 on April 29.
